Spring Juvenile next up for Plinth

Plinth (left) pictured getting the better of Ivan Grozny at Leopardstown over Christmas
(Healy Racing Photos)
The four-year-old made a winning debut in the colours of JP McManus when getting the better of the Willie Mullins-trained Ivan Grozny by a head in a Leopardstown thriller over the Christmas period.
McManus' racing manager Frank Berry believes it would be dangerous to take the Leopardstown form too literally, however.
He said: "He'll have a run at Leopardstown on Hennessy day and we'll know a bit more about him after that.
"He'll get an entry in the Triumph, but we'll see how he gets on next time.
"I'd say the horse that finished second to him at Christmas improved a lot for the run and jumped much better next time.
"You can look at these things too closely sometimes, but Aidan is happy with the horse and we'll see what happens on Hennessy day."

Ammendments to Irish Flat program

Champions weekend should have the crowds flocking to Leopardstown like at Christmas
(Healy Racing Photos)
- OTHER ENHANCEMENTS TO IRISH FLAT BLACK TYPE
PROGRAMME FOR 2014 ANNOUNCED
Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan Upgraded to Group 3
Two New Listed Races Created at Naas and Killarney
Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) today announced a number of enhancements to the Irish Flat Pattern race programme for the 2014 season.
The principal changes concern the creation of Irish Champions Weekend, a new two-day meeting featuring ten Group races, including five Group 1 races, to be run at Leopardstown on Saturday 13th September and the Curragh on Sunday 14th September as a joint venture showcasing Ireland’s two premier Flat racecourses.
The full Black Type race programme for Irish Champions Weekend, which will see the Solonaway Stakes (8 furlongs, 3yo ) upgraded from Group 3 to Group 2 status, has now been formally approved by the European Pattern Committee.
Leopardstown – Saturday 13th September
Irish Champions Stakes (Group 1) 10f 3yo
Matron (Group 1) 8f 3yo Fillies
Solonaway (Group 2)* 8f 3yo (formerly at the Curragh)
Golden Fleece (Group 3) 8f 2yo
Kilternan (Group 3) 10f 3yo
*Upgraded from Group 3 status
The Curragh – Sunday 14th September
Irish St Leger (Group 1) 14f 3yo
National (Group 1) 7f 2yo
Moyglare Stud (Group 1) 7f 2yo Fillies
Blandford (Group 2) 10f 3yo Fillies
Flying Five (Group 3) 5f 3yo
Additionally, the Curragh will stage a two-day Irish Champions Weekend Trials meeting on Saturday/Sunday 23rd/24th August featuring the Group 2 Debutante (7f 2yo Fillies) and Futurity (7f 2yo), along with the Group 3 Renaissance (6f 3yo ), Royal Whip (10f 3yo ) and Ballycullen (14f 3yo ).
Confirming the Pattern race programme for Irish Champions Weekend, HRI’s Director of Racing Jason Morris commented: “HRI is delighted to have secured European agreement for our proposed schedule of races for Irish Champions Weekend, including the promotion of the Solonaway Stakes to Group 2 status. This two-day meeting will be a fantastic highlight of the Flat racing season, not just within Ireland but also in Europe and indeed globally, given the quality of races that will be staged and the provision of top-class opportunities over the full spectrum of ages and distances. We look forward to welcoming the world’s leading horses, owners, trainers and jockeys to what will be two magnificent days of sporting competition.”
Other Pattern Race Changes for 2014
The following Irish Pattern race changes have also been approved by the European Pattern Committee for 2014:
Upgrade from Listed to Group 3
The Vintage Crop (14f 4yo ) at Navan on May 18 2014.
This race is ideally positioned in the calendar to provide a Group race opportunity for Irish stayers 3½ weeks before Royal Ascot. It is a well-deserved first Group 3 race for Navan, which will also be staging the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes (3yo 10f) on 12th April in 2014, the race being transferred from Leopardstown for one year only for calendar reasons.
Downgrade from Group 2 to 3
The Derrinstown Derby Trial (10f 3yo only) at Leopardstown on May 11 2014.
Regrettably the Derrinstown Derby Trial (3yo 10f) failed to meet the rating parameter required for a Group 2 race for the fourth consecutive year and the race is therefore automatically downgraded under the European Pattern Committee Ground Rules.
Two New Listed Races
At Naas on June 2 2014 for three-year-olds only over six furlongs.
At Killarney on July 14 2014 for three-year-olds and upwards fillies over a mile.
The new 6f Listed race at Naas provides the first opportunity for 3yo sprinters to compete within their own age category for Black Type in Ireland and it will augment an already very strong card at Naas which includes three other Listed races.
The Killarney race will be a new feature event at their very popular Summer Festival and it will be another welcome addition to the Irish Black Type programme for fillies and mares, which HRI has significantly enhanced in recent years.

First foal for Fame And Glory
(21st January 2014)
Fame And Glory sired his first foal when Minch Bloodstock’s Have More produced a bay colt at Castlehyde Stud on Monday night. Have More is a half-sister to Junior who won a Grade 2 hurdle at Sandown for Alan King along with the ‘Kim Muir’ at Cheltenham by 24 lengths and the Listed Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle for David Pipe.
Grange Stud manager Albert Sherwood said: “He’s a good foal, with plenty of size and great presence. We’d be delighted to see more like him.”
A brilliant racehorse by Montjeu, Fame And Glory won Group 1 races at 2, 3, 4 and 5 years including the Irish Derby by 5 lengths.

Hydrogen: the most expensive yearling to sell at auction in 2012
PICTURE: Edward Whitaker (racingpost.com/photos)Dam of Authorized to visit Camelot in 2014
FUNSIE, the dam of Derby hero Authorized, is set to visit Coolmore's triple Classic winner Camelot this year.
The 15-year-old daughter of Saumarez, who was not covered in 2013, was sold as part of Paul Makin's Paulyn dispersal at last year's Goffs November Sale for €550,000 to John Warren and Newsells Park Stud general manager Julian Dollar.
"I bought her mostly with Nathaniel in mind, but she is quite exposed to Galileo," said Dollar. "She has a yearling filly by him, a two-year-old by him and a three-year-old by him who is yet to run [2.5m guineas puchase Hydrogen]. So I think we've got to wait and see what happens with Galileo. On the other hand, we know she works with [Camelot's sire] Montjeu courtesy of Authorized.
"Would I be doing her a favour if I sent her to Nathaniel and vice-versa? Camelot was a serious racehorse and I think he will be a great fit for the mare."
Funsie has produced three winners, headed by Authorized, who won the Derby, Juddmonte International and Racing Post Trophy.
Danehill mare Shastye is also heading to Coolmore to be covered by Galileo again.
The mare's first successful mating with Coolmore's juggernaut produced Classic-placed runner Secret Gesture, while the second mating produced a colt who sold for 3.6m gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October yearling sale last year - the most expensive colt to sell at auction worldwide in 2013.
Group 1-placed mare Lady Darshaan is set to visit Redoute's Choice, while the Old Vic mare Flawly, the dam of Group 3 winner Best Name, will be covered by Dubawi.
"I am a big fan of what Redoute's Choice has done in Australia," said Dollar. "I see no reason why he won't take off here and he definitely deserves to be well supported by breeders.
"Flawly is one of the best mares on the stud and she goes to Dubawi. The ill-fated Piping Rock was bred on the Dubawi-Old Vic cross, so we know it works. The mare crosses very well with the Mr Prospector line, as was seen with Best Name, who is a son of King's Best."
Kinnaird, the dam of Royal Lodge Stakes winner and leading Classic hope Berkshire, will be among the second book of dual world champion Frankel.
The first foal by Newsells Park Stud stallion Nathaniel was born at Waddesdon Stud last week. The colt is out of Liel, a daughter of Pivotal and Cheveley Park Stakes winner Magical Romance.

The first foal by dual world champion arrived at Coolmore on Saturday
PICTURE: Trevor JonesFrankel's first foal arrives at Coolmore
THE first foal by undefeated dual world champion Frankel was born at Coolmore on Saturday night.
The new arrival, a colt, is the first foal out of dual Group winner Chrysanthemum, who was the first mare confirmed in foal to Frankel last year.
Born at 8.30pm on Saturday, the foal is reported by Coolmore as "a handsome colt with a good head, a white blaze and great presence".
Chrysanthemum, a daughter of champion sire Danehill Dancer, won the Group 3 C.L. Weld Park Stakes and Park Express Stakes at the Curragh, also finishing third in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the same course.
She is one of three winner for her dam Well Spoken, a daughter of Princess Margaret Stakes heroine Saintly Speech.
Juddmonte Farms general manager Philip Mitchell said: "From the reports that I have received, Frankel's first foal is everything we could have hoped for.
"These are very exciting times for everyone who has supported the horse and we much look forward to the rest of his first crop of foals."
Frankel retired to stud last year as the winner of 14 races - ten at the highest level.
Standing at his birthplace Banstead Manor for an advertised fee of £125,000, the son of champion sire Galileo covered 133 mares in his first season, of whom 126 were confirmed in foal.

St Nic loses his brave fight

St Nicholas Abbey
(Healy Racing Photos)
St Nicholas Abbey, Aidan O'Brien's triple Coronation Cup hero, died on Tuesday morning, confirmed Coolmore.
The brilliant seven-year-old, winner of six races at the highest level, had to be put down after he suffered a bout of colic.
A statement issued by Coolmore read: "Regretfully St Nicholas Abbey has lost his brave battle after suffering a colic this morning. Surgery revealed a severe strangulating colon torsion that was unviable and he had to be euthanized on humane grounds."
The son of Montjeu faced a multitude of problems as he strived to recover from a fractured pastern he sustained last summer.
O'Brien's star had to be retired after suffering a leg injury on the gallops at Ballydoyle when being prepared for the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Just two days after he underwent a major leg operation at Fethard Equine Hospital last July, St Nicholas Abbey had to have emergency surgery to be treated for colic.
He then had a further setback in August when it was discovered a steel weight-bearing pin in a cannon bone had broken, and then had a further serious blow in October with ''mild laminitic changes in the left fore''.
St Nicholas Abbey will be buried at Coolmore, and the statement went on: "This is extremely unfortunate as St Nicholas Abbey had been in terrific form, the laminitis was resolving very well and the fracture had healed better than expected.
"Coolmore would like to thank the surgeons, the international experts and all the staff at Fethard Equine Hospital who gave him such excellent care 24/7. We would also like to thank the multitude of well-wishers for all the cards and messages of support for St Nicholas Abbey. He will be buried in the graveyard here at Coolmore."
St Nicholas Abbey burst on to the scene in August 2009 at the Curragh, where he won a maiden by four lengths, and signed off as an unbeaten juvenile with a most impressive display in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster.
As a three-year-old, he didn't run after suffering defeat in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, but won the first of three Coronation Cups at Epsom in June 2011. During the same year he also claimed the Breeders' Cup Turf under Joseph O'Brien, who entered the record books as the youngest rider to win at the meeting.
Last March he showed he was as good as ever when winning the Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan. St Nicholas Abbey's third Coronation Cup triumph last June - his final racecourse appearance - took his career earnings to almost £5million.
Epsom racecourse tweeted: "We're all saddened to hear that St Nicholas Abbey has lost his battle today and will forever hold fond memories of his three Coronation Cup wins."

Dundalk preview - Lone Star
Updated: Thursday, 09 Jan 2014 18:55 |

Aidan O'Brien's will be hoping for better from Lone Star at the all-weather venue on Friday.
A 200,000gns son of Sea The Stars, the colt finished down the field in a Curragh race won by smart stablemate Century in October and more will be expected in the Crowne Plaza Hotel Race & Stay Maiden.
His jockey Joseph O'Brien is an interesting booking for Never A Quarrel in the opening Winter Series At Dundalk Handicap (6.15), with the four-year-old a first Dundalk representative for UK-based Australian trainer Jeremy Gask.
Standing in his way are Gallena, Inishmot Duchess and Catwilldo, who fought out the finish to a six-furlong handicap here last month and now drop to the minimum trip.
Our Manekineko completed a brace on the same evening and bids for the hat-trick in the www.dundalkstadium.com Handicap, but this is a hotly-contested affair, with Victor's Beach and Deep Speed also arriving in winning form.
Lightly-raced seven-year-old mare Maontri demolished her rivals when applied with a hood for the first time at this circuit last week, and she has her sights raised for the Floodlit Friday Nights Rated Race.
Evergreen veteran Mountain Coral will be a tough nut to crack, as will The Black Devil, who returned to form when second at the start of December.
Bomber Jackson signed off 2013 with a clear-cut success but his subsequent 7lb rise means he has to concede weight all round over the same course and distance in the Crowne Plaza Leading Jockey & Trainer Championship Handicap.
Almost half of the field in the www.dundalkstadium.com (QR) Handicap were last seen over obstacles and it may be that Carried, who justified favouritism to break through over this track and trip on his most recent appearance, has a bit more speed

Tom O'Brien said St Nicholas Abbey (right) is: "doing everything that is required to give himself the best possible chance of making a recovery"
PICTURE: Getty ImagesSt Nicholas beginning to show signs of recovery
TOM O'BRIEN, the surgeon at Fethard Equine Hospital overseeing St Nicholas Abbey's recovery, has revealed the Coolmore stallion is beginning to show signs of recovery from his recent laminitis scare.
Since the initial surgery to deal with the career-ending, and potentially life-threatening, pastern fracture he sustained in July St Nicholas Abbey has been faced with, and overcome, a number of complications.
Firstly the six-time Group 1 winner was struck by colic, then there was a further complication when the pin in his cannonbone that was supporting his weight broke, and most recently he has been inflicted by laminitis - an inflammation of sensitive layers of tissue inside the hoof.
Dr Tom O'Brien, based at Fethard Equine Hospital in Tipperary, said on The Morning Line: "Laminitis is often a life-threatening disease, this is a troublesome situation and one that is hard to deal with."
However recently there have been positive signs. "What we've been monitoring his foot for very closely is to see if there is new hoof growth and now we're seeing it," said O'Brien. "Where the hair meets the hoof we are seeing a couple of millimetres of new hoof beginning to grow, and also on his sole.
"We are happy with how he is doing, his general daily routine involves him lying down a lot, he gets up for periods any time he wants to eat and we're taking him for short walks to help strengthen the right front while also increasing the blood supply going to the left. In addition to that he is having a number of physiotherapy periods each day.
"He's an incredible horse to deal with on a daily basis, he's an intelligent horse and manages himself very well. Ever since he came in with the original injury he's been faced with a number of challenges. He's smart, he knows what's required of him if he is to stand a chance of beating the odds and he's doing everything that is required of him to give himself the best possible chance of making a recovery."
Detailing the treatment that has aided St Nicholas Abbey's recovery, O'Brien added: "We used maggot therapy, so we got medical grade maggots and enclosed them in the foot cast. By putting them in their they eat all the dead and infected tissue, they eat it all and the change that has happened since doing that has been quite remarkable."

Plinth gets up to deny the favorite Grozny
By Donal Murphy
The son of Montjeu, who was one from nine on the level, was making his hurdling debut here, and he was sent off a 3/1 chance under Tony McCoy in the silks of JP McManus.
Despite making a mistake at the last, the bay gelding kept on best on the run-in, getting up close home to deny the even money favorite Ivan Grozny, for Ruby Walsh and Willie Mullins by a head.
Moss Street under Bobby McNally for Gordon Elliott finished a further length and a half back in third at 14/1.
APOB said afterwards: "He is a horse that JP always liked and it was a lovely first run (over hurdles).
"He was a little bit green but he quicken up well. He has had a spell up with Con and Robbie Power (to help with his jumping) and it is nice to have a winner here for JP."
Afterwards Boylesports introduced both PLINTH and Ivan Gronzy at 25/1 for the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham in March.
